Evaluating Curve Number Implementation Alternatives for Peak Flow Predictions in Urbanized Watersheds Using SWMM

The application of hydrologic modeling tools to represent urban watersheds is widespread, and calculation infiltration losses an essential component these models. curve number (CN) method widely used in such models implemented US EPA’s Storm Water Management Model (SWMM 5). SWMM 5 can be created either using CN values computed only for the pervious fraction subcatchments, or entire subcatchment area, but choice not clearly understood. present work evaluates differences between approaches computation within through a comparison with field data collected watershed Alabama WinTR-55. Four computing were considered which impervious fractions varied according threshold value. Results indicated that Fully Composite approach, from all areas, yielded best results sub-watershed higher average CN. It was also observed Cut-off 90 93 better subcatchments lower WinTR-55 hydrographs had larger peak flow rates, decreased intensity rain events. Research findings are useful modelers, particular setting up method.
